Joy Williams
Following the dissolution of The Civil Wars, Williams’s Venus documented the reconstruction of voice and identity. Executive-produced and co-produced by Morris, the album relies on atmosphere rather than adornment. He co-wrote eight of its principal compositions — “Sweet Love of Mine,” “Woman (Oh Mama),” “One Day I Will,” “What a Good Woman Does,” “You Loved Me,” “The Dying Kind,” “Til Forever,” and “Welcome Home.” Their acoustic counterparts, released the following year, expose the songs’ internal architecture: lean, measured, and resilient. Critics praised the project’s clarity of tone; together the albums read as a quiet assertion of agency.
